Yes, There Really Is a Mound

Flower Mound takes its name from an actual mound of flowers. On the northeast corner of FM 2499 and FM 3040 sits The Flower Mound, a 12.5-acre hill that rises about 50 feet above the surrounding prairie. Formed during the Cretaceous Period, it is one of the last unplowed remnants of the original Blackland Prairie, and it looks today much as it did when the first pioneers found it in the 1840s and named it for the profusion of wildflowers blanketing its slopes each spring.

More than 400 varieties of native plants and flowers grow on The Mound, including bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, big bluestem, and switchgrass. The land was once part of Blackmark Farms, owned by Edward Marcus of Neiman Marcus fame, and Lady Bird Johnson was among the notable visitors who came to admire it. In 1983, longtime resident Otto Consolvo led a group of citizens who secured The Mound in a permanent land conservancy under the Flower Mound Foundation, and it was designated a State of Texas Historic Site in 1984.

The Mound is free and open to the public, with a single live oak providing shade for a picnic table at the top. A nondenominational Easter sunrise service has been held there for nearly 50 years, and spring wildflower season draws photographers and families from across the area.

Local Lifestyle

Flower Mound is known for its active, outdoors-oriented lifestyle. The town maintains nearly 1,000 acres of parkland, including 57 parks, 37 unique playgrounds, numerous athletic fields, and more than 75 miles of hike, bike, and equestrian trails connecting parks, neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. The 243-acre Twin Coves Park on the north shore of Lake Grapevine offers camping, boating, and lakeside recreation, while Heritage Park's splash pad and Hound Mound dog park are everyday favorites.

Residents can spend their days hiking, biking, playing sports, enjoying neighborhood parks, or exploring the natural areas surrounding the community. Flower Mound's proximity to Lake Grapevine and Lewisville Lake adds even more opportunities for boating, fishing, kayaking, and waterfront recreation.

Annual Events

Community events are a tradition in Flower Mound, and nearly all of them are free:

  • Independence Fest (July 4) – The town's marquee event, beginning with the Children's Parade and ending with the largest fireworks show in the area at Bakersfield Park. In between, residents enjoy hours of live music on the main stage (2026's headliner was Gabby Barrett), food trucks, a classic car show, vendor booths, and a kids' zone.
  • Concerts and Movies in the Park (summer) – Free evening concert and movie series that turn the town's parks into open-air gathering spots all summer long.
  • Rhythms at the River Walk and Duck Derby (September) – A distinctive fall favorite at River Walk, where more than 30,000 rubber ducks race for charity alongside live music, food trucks, vendors, and kids' activities, benefiting the Cross Timbers Rotary Club.
  • Dorothy's Dash 5K and Kids' K (fall) – A community run in its third decade, honoring a former town employee and benefiting the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
  • Diwali: Festival of Lights (October) – Hosted at Gerault Park with the Denton County India Cultural Association, celebrating one of the community's many cultural traditions.
  • Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting (early December) – A nighttime parade of lighted floats travels down Spinks Road to Gerault Park, where the evening culminates in a countdown to the lighting of a 50-foot tree covered in more than 100,000 LED lights, followed by fireworks. The morning kicks off with the Reindeer Run 5K and Grinch Sprint.
